Acarology for One Health

The chosen theme for III CLAC and VI SIBAC, "One Health", reflects the interconnectedness and global nature of health care for humans, animals, plants and the environment. Over the last decade, the One Health concept has expanded, becoming an approach, and is currently considered a movement which has gained support of institutions and organizations around the world. The One Health holistic vision aims at promoting health and well-being on the planet though risk prevention and mitigation of problems originating at the interface among humans, animals and the environment as a whole.

In this context, mites represent a surprising ecological diversity and occur in the most diverse environments, with a broad spectrum of ways of life, can strongly influence: human, animal and environment health. For this reason, acaralogy (the study of mites, encompasses multiple areas of knowledge, which focuses on health, well-being, preservation and environmental balance among them. Research lines in acarology related to One Health are studies on biodiversity of the most diverse ecosystems; use of mites as environmental quality bioindicators; pesticide resistance management; prospection and use of biological control agents and development of new technologies for pest control; enhancement of ecological services; prevention and mitigation of impacts of bioinvasions; vectoring of pathogens affecting human, animal and plant health; as well as a base for development and production of biotechnological products with medical, veterinary and phytosanitary use.

Owing to its interdisciplinary and multisectorial nature, acarological knowledge, has a lot to contribute to the challenges presented by One Health. Therefore the organization of this Latinamerican Congress of Acarology aims at inserting acarology of the discipline in this global movement and at encouraging collaborative efforts  among professionals that work in the several branches of acarology as well as with those that work in related fields.

Questions about the Congress should be sent to the organizing committee, by e-mail: eabramides@terra.com.br
